In 2010, the Criterion Collection’s YouTube channel uploaded a video of director Guillermo del Toro picking his favourite films from an unassuming store cupboard fully stocked with enough classic and contemporary cinematic masterpieces to make any self-proclaimed cinephile swoon. 15 years later, we’re still addicted to watching iconic and indie filmmakers and film stars alike gushing about their most treasured films in a candid and authentic way.
It’s an undeniably fun and refreshing take on celebrity publicity, making it wonderfully entertaining to begin with. It combines your love of film with your love of the people behind them, while offering the chance to learn more about your heroes—and fellow lovers—of cinema. What’s more endearing than watching Pamela Anderson reveal her passion for cinema, and, as far as I’m concerned, great taste? Or more iconic than watching the legendary Francis Ford Coppola choosing his own film from the closet? (Same vibes as Willem Dafoe playfully picking out The Last Temptation of Christ.) Seeing father-daughter duo, Ethan and Maya Hawke, bonding over their love of film is also enjoyable enough to make me a staunch defender of Hollywood nepotism.
My only criticism of the Criterion Closet would be the insane jealousy it evokes. My adoration for Ayo Edebiri almost became abhorrence when I discovered the magnificent selection that she walked away with is worth around £700 (no wonder they allegedly kicked her out). Although, even if you don’t get to leave with a tote-bagful of cinematic triumphs, you at least get plenty of additions to your—probably never-ending—watchlist. Since these videos are short and sweet, they’re easily binge-watched, opportunely leaving you more time to watch what these cinematic icons are practically begging you to.
In short, if the Criterion Closet is Winona Ryder’s “church”, then I’m joining her religion.
