Perfume Genius has returned with “It’s a Mirror” as the first single from his upcoming seventh studio album Glory, which will be released on March 28th. The musician, whose real name is Michael Alden Hadreas, is best known for his indie rock music which draws on experiences of queerness, trauma and self-discovery.
Sonically, “It’s a Mirror” is intense and cathartic – Hadreas croons, “It’s a mirror/ holy terror” over a claustrophobic crescendo. The track’s reflective but almost oppressive energy makes sense given its origins—Hadreas recently revealed to The Guardian that Glory was conceptualized during a period of depression amid the pandemic. The album’s cover art reflects this introspection, depicting Hadreas’ contorted body lying on a studio floor.
Yet, despite its ominous atmosphere, “It’s a Mirror” feels less self-destructive than some of his previous work. Instead, it carries a cautious optimism. Lines like, “My whole life is / Open just outside the door,” reveal a shift in perspective. There’s a sense of apprehension but also an emerging self-awareness—showing an artist confronting his fears rather than succumbing to them.
Perfume Genius has long excelled at balancing vulnerability with sonic grandeur, and “It’s a Mirror” is no exception. If this single is any indication, Glory could mark an evolution in Hadreas’ career.
