A Breakdown of the 2025 IFTAs

The 22nd Irish Film and Television Academy (IFTA) Awards, held at the Dublin Royal Convention Centre, celebrated a remarkable year in Irish cinema and television.

A standout moment was Belfast rap trio Kneecap’s announcement to cease filmmaking after their self-titled movie garnered four awards, including Best Director and Best Costume Design. Kneecap’s debut into the film industry with their unique blend of music and storytelling has been pivotal in bringing Irish-language cinema to a wider audience; however, they are now turning their focus back to their music. Hopefully, this departure will not slow the momentum they have created but instead create space for emerging filmmakers to continue experimenting with fresh Irish narratives.

The ceremony also reaffirmed the international stature of Irish talent through Cillian Murphy’s consecutive win for Lead Actor in a Film, this time for his role in Small Things Like These. His back-to-back victories enhance the global profile of Irish cinema, reinforcing the notion that Ireland continues to be a fertile ground for world-class talent.

Saoirse Ronan had dual victories for Best Actress in The Outrun and Best Supporting Actress in Blitz. In a particularly poignant moment, Ronan chose to bring emerging talent Alisha Weir on stage during her acceptance speech, highlighting her commitment to nurturing the next generation of Irish talent.

Additionally, Anthony Boyle’s recognition as the IFTA Rising Star points to a promising future as he follows in the footsteps of previous winners such as Nicola Coughlan, Michael Fassbender, and Saoirse Ronan.

The success of the Disney+ series Say Nothing indicates a growing appetite for Irish narratives on international streaming platforms. The series secured a number of key awards on the night, including Actress in a Lead Role for Lola Petticrew, Actress in a Supporting Role for Hazel Doupe, and Actor in a Supporting Role for Tom Vaughan-Lawlor.

Colm Meaney’s Lifetime Achievement Award serves as a testament to his enduring influence and dedication to his craft. With a career spanning five decades, including his iconic role as Miles O’Brien in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, this award celebrates his illustrious career in film, television, and stage.

While Kneecap’s exit closes a distinct chapter, the emergence of fresh talent alongside celebrated veterans like Murphy and Ronan highlights a dynamic industry in Ireland, poised for continued growth and international acclaim.
