Footwear trends offer a captivating lens through which we can follow cultural shifts and understand the values that society prioritises at any given time. There is a constant resurgence of shoes that blend the past and present, from retro trainers being named “still in style” for men for 2025, to the unexpected comeback of Crocs—now reimagined with platforms and plush details to suit modern tastes. These trends can be seen as a reflection of society’s ever-changing nature, shaped by a mix of nostalgia, practicality, comfort or even the shock factor that comes with sporting bold styles! Intriguingly, the evolution of trending footwear often remains pronounced in women’s shoes rather than men’s, raising questions about the deeper dynamics at play between gender and fashion.
Shoe trends not only reflect the changing seasons, but can be used to elevate one’s wardrobe, and even tell a story. Fashion is art, and footwear can play a crucial role in self-expression, inspiring personal growth and transformation through style. For example, 2023 witnessed the rise of platform Uggs with the added height projecting a sense of power while providing stability and comfort. After years of Uggs
dominating casual footwear, the platforms were finally embraced as “chic.” In contrast, early 2024 saw the resurgence of cowboy boots, most notably, in bold, colourful, and extravagant designs. British Vogue even described them as “practical and […] camp, but cowboy boots have always remained democratic in their appeal.” Celebrated for their versatility in being dressed up or down, cowboy boots offer a
nostalgic reference to the Midwest, while also embracing a cultural fusion of vibrant colours and metallics that inject personality into outfits. On the other hand, 2025 shoe trends are taking shape as more dainty, minimalist examples of fashion, with ballet flats, loafers and Mary Janes taking centre stage. This move towards a more understated elegance may reflect a cultural appreciation for timelessness and
polished designs over the bold statement footwear of the previous year. The resurgence of dainty silhouettes suggests a longing for effortless sophistication, paired with more neutral tones and subtle embellishments, clearly contrasting 2024.
While women’s footwear is constantly evolving with striking variations of what to sport each season, men’s shoe trends remain largely unchanged, with retro trainers or classic brogues always in favour. It may be that men’s footwear simply prioritises longevity and practicality over experimental fashion. However, there is room for change: imagine a shift away from the usual sports trainers and rubber sliders in favour of bolder choices, such as vibrant espadrilles or a more widespread embracing of boat shoes – just some suggestions! After all, footwear can be a tool for self expression, regardless of gender. Whether these trends introduce a style entirely new or bring back beloved styles from the past, one thing remains certain—shoe fashion is always in motion.
