A recent article from Time Out magazine named the popular Edinburgh Pizzeria Civerinos (known affectionately as “Civs”) as the thirteenth best pizza in the world.
In a list that compiles traditional Neapolitan pizzerias such as Pizza da Attilio, classic New-York Slices from Scarr’s Pizza and innovative modern-twists like the Italian-Japanese fusion of Pizza Marumo, Civs nomination is undeniably major accolade.
Time Out lauds Civs as being one of “the best slices you’ll ever shove down your gob’ citing the “carefully curated toppings,” “chewy crusts,” and “sweet-but-tangy marinara sauce” as reasons for its excellence.
Civs opened in 2014 on Hunter Square, and has since expanded to include locations in Portobello, Stockbridge and Forrest Road. The chain offers both slices and 14 or 20-inch Pizzas, with Time Out giving particular praise to the Italian Sausage Pizza.
Such love for Civs is shared by students; with one second-year hailing Civs as an “underrated campus lunch spot”. Another student commented on its good value – “with student discount you can get a slice for as little as three pounds; and they’re huge!”
Neil, the General Manager of the Forrest Road store marked the commendation as a “massive achievement” against such “tough competition” – stating it was “fantastic to be 13th best overall.”
Noting the absence of other Scottish Pizzerias – Neil stated that they will now “stand and die on the hill” that they’re technically considered the best Pizza in Scotland, with students agreeing that Civs “totally deserves” such acclaim.
During the late 1800s, Scotland welcomed its biggest wave of Italian migrants.
Many entrepreneurial Italian Scots set up their own fish and chips shops, ice cream parlours, and, later, Pizzerias.
Civerinos was founded in 2014 and now has branches in Hunter Square, Portobello, Stockbridge, and Glasgow.
As the weather warms up a Civs picnic in the meadows practically becomes a ritual to Edinburgh residents; so if you haven’t already had the chance to “shove (a Civs) down your gob” this spring, what are you waiting for?
