Sometimes it can be hard to find somewhere to eat that is close to uni, yummy, yet student budget friendly. However, after many trials and errors, I have managed to curate the best lunch spots which don’t compromise on taste or price. So, if you never want to be stuck on where to eat again, keep reading!
First on the list is Black Medicine Coffee, not just because of its cosy aesthetic, but also its affordability. With filled croissants for £4.75 and bagels and ciabattas for £5.75, this has become my go-to lunch spot. It also is laptop friendly, making it the perfect place if you need to do some last minute work on your lunch break.
Next up is The Mosque Kitchen. Located at 50a Potterrow, it is conveniently close to George Square. Plus, you can get hot, yummy food for just a bit more than a Sainsbury’s meal deal. For instance, a lentil curry costs £4, a Chicken Korma costs £5.50, and Naan bread is only £1!
If you haven’t been to Cult Coffee Roaster’s you are missing out! This is the perfect lunch spot if you want to meet up with a friend somewhere close to campus, but still have a cool, trendy vibe. Like Black Medicine Coffee, you can use your laptop, so it is ideal if you have a group project or some last-minute tasks to do.
Just down the street from Cult Coffee you will find Snax cafe. This is the best place for lunch if you need something quick and affordable. They have a vast menu, from burgers to veggie brunches, and they even do filled rolls for just £2. I am a big fan of their hot toasted wraps which have lots of filling options and are just £4.50.
One place that has to be included on the list is Fettle. Only a two minute walk from campus, they do the best focaccia in Edinburgh. Although to sit in is more expensive, you can get food to take away from £5.50. Moreover, if you fancy a bit of an earlier lunch, their breakfast focaccias are served till 11.30 am and are a bit cheaper than their standard menu.
You probably have already visited, but if not, you need to try The Nile Valley Cafe. Sometimes there is a small queue, but it is worth the wait, as a homemade wrap and drink will only cost you £6. The wraps are both incredibly tasty and filling, making it one of my favourite lunch spots near campus.
Last but not least, is Wanderers Kneaded. If you fancy grabbing lunch on your way home, or the weather is nice enough to sit outside, this is the perfect lunch spot. Located next to The Meadows, they do homemade wood-fired pizzas to take away. Plus, every Thursday to Sunday 12 to 3 pm they have a £5 Margherita deal!
I hope that this list serves as inspiration that it is possible to find tasty lunch spots which are close to University and affordable!
