How to Make the Most of Spring in Edinburgh

The clocks have changed, daffodils are blooming, and the sun is out: you could say spring has officially sprung in Edinburgh. But for us students, the real test of time stands with the annual mass pilgrimage to The Meadows and George Square Gardens. Whether for a lunchtime chitchat with friends, lying down while “studying” or even to practice slacklining, this acts as an announcement to the rest of Edinburgh “spring is here, what are you waiting for?” With this influx beginning last week, my mind has fallen on how to best embrace the season in Edinburgh.

Photosynthesise At Your Local Pub/Café

For me, popping out of your flat, sitting outside on a cobbled street with a coffee in hand, the golden sun gently warming your face (but without forcing you to squint) is the epitome of spring. With pubs and cafés across the city extending outside seating, we have no other choice but to support their local business and make the most of gorgeous weather (at least that’s what I’m telling my bank balance). Although this may not seem like a very distinctive shift from your regular routine, searching for the perfect sun trap tempts the experimentation of new coffee shops. In particular, I would recommend the intensely sunny cornerstone of Kuna Café be your first port of call, with Topping & Co opposite meaning you can sip away alongside a new book.

Liven Up Your Flat

Your surroundings influence your day, from the second you switch off your alarm to the moment you roll back into bed (at the end of the day, not five minutes later). Therefore, joyous and lively additions to your flat, in your room and communal spaces can welcome the optimistic spring attitude into all aspects of your life. A firm favourite among my friends are daffodils. Costing less than a pound in Lidl (what a bargain), having fresh flowers immediately cheers up your flat, even if there are dirty dishes stacked high, with the bight yellow really honing in on the spring energy.

Beach Trip

With the beach right on Edinburgh’s doorstep, a visit to its shores is a spring essential, whether staying local with Portobello or looking for a day trip to North Berwick. With luscious sandy stretches, both spots are perfect for a Pinterest-worthy picnic or for enjoying some local lunch, be it Civerino’s or The Lobster Shack. Staying for sunset? As the sun slips away and with it any remaining warmth, set up a cozy bonfire and toast marshmallows for the ultimate beach experience. For the bravest of beachgoers, don’t forget your swimwear for an exhilarating cold dip in the sea!

This list could not be complete without a mention of the many beautiful walks around Edinburgh, enhanced during springtime, most notably Arthur’s Seat, Calton Hill, The Pentlands, and Water of Leith.

Hopefully this has inspired you to head out into Edinburgh’s great outdoors to make the most of this year’s spring! After all, that’s what our holiday is for, right?
