Non-Traditional Nights Out: Your Guide to Hangover-Free Fun in Edinburgh

Cowgate – perfect for a needle drop of Chappell Roan…but sometimes we crave an evening of peace. With everything on offer, should a ‘night out’ be limited to Sneaky Pete’s sticky floors? We think not. So here’s a roundup of the best activities in Edinburgh, sans ‘club’.

Games Night out on the (Old) town

Step away from Midlothian nightlife in favour of a different thrill – good old competition. Chock-full of every retro game your dad can think of, NQ64 is a great spot for a night filled with friendly rivalry, and your monthly fix of cardio via Dance Dance Revolution.

For a less neon experience, try Flight Club – the perfect reinvention of a classic pub game. With your Student Card, you can even nab free Social Darts on Tuesdays.

Dynamic Earth Planetarium Lates

For an out of this world experience – why not immerse yourself in the 360° views of Dynamic Earth’s Planetarium.

With special ‘late night events’ on offer, this is perfect for a chilled evening with friends. Unmissable showings include Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon paired with stunning solar visuals and for the cinephiles, check out a screening of cult classic Aliens.

Bookshop Late Events

Perhaps my favourite thing about Edinburgh is its collection of quirky bookshops. If, like me, you enjoy wandering through the shelves, try spinning this activity into an evening to remember.

Lighthouse Books have QUITE the selection of literary events– an honorable mention: ‘Queer Vampire Night’. Event vouchers, available here, are redeemable against featured books. So… graduate from the seasonal Twilight screening we know you’re planning, and explore the bloodthirsty world on West Nicolson Street instead.

Pottery Night

Let your creativity (or paint) run wild at a local pottery studio. Doodles, a Marchmont favourite, is open late midweek– so whether it’s post-lecture stress relief or a flat mate bonding sesh, book your table and gain a new mug for the ever-growing collection. Tip: If you lack the artistic flare of those inhabiting ECA – the stencils could fool anyone.

So whatever takes your fancy, Edinburgh has plenty to offer when you want a club-free evening activity!
