A bike rental scheme from Swedish company Voi has launched for a trial period in Edinburgh. During this temporary period, 50+ bikes are stationed across Edinburgh in designated ‘dockless’ parking spots.
By adopting this scheme, Edinburgh is following major UK cities such as Manchester, London, and Cambridge. A similar trial period is also currently taking place in Glasgow.
In a press release, Transport and Environment Convener, Councillor Stephen Jenkinson, said:
“The scheme will complement our existing active travel and transport infrastructure and enhance connectivity, while also cutting congestion and reducing emissions.”
Typical 20-minute journeys will cost approximately £2.20. However, concessions are available for elderly people and people of other protected groups.
The Student spoke with an Edinburgh resident who had tried the bikes to gauge some opinions. Second-year PPE student Theodore had this to say, following a brief journey on a new bike.
“Riding was very smooth, and the bikes felt very new and responsive.” Other good features included “a speedometer”, and “convenient adjustable seats.”
However, the student also predicted possible issues with the future of the scheme.
“Bike availability, especially following live events, may be an issue, with people possibly driving bikes intoxicated, or leaving them in distant drop-off points.”
Safety for all drivers and pedestrians will be a chief concern for Voi, especially considering frequent cyclist injuries caused by the tram network, which has injured and even killed cyclists in the past.
By February, Edinburgh will have 800+ Voi bikes, at no cost to the council.
