Halloween is approaching, but for some of us, there is nothing more haunting than thinking about the future. I see you, your eyes dreary from computer screen glare – don’t lie. You would think that seeing endless opportunities on your LinkedIn doomscroll would make it easy, but sometimes, it makes it harder to know where to start. There are just too many options, too much information to consume.
We’re all humans at the end of the day: we need human connection, not just internet connection. But while it’s easier for some of us to find jobs through friends and family, and get invited to networking events, not everyone has access to these resources.
This is where the Careers Service comes in! On 7-9 October, they will be hosting Discover Careers – their biggest event of the year – right in our magnificent McEwan Hall. You don’t need to make a booking for it; you can just drop in and meet a wide range of different employers in various sectors – yes, in the flesh.
To get an idea of what to expect, you can open the Discover Careers Guide on your phone, and find information on the exhibiting organizations, what day they’ll be there and where to locate their booth. This simple guide allows you to curate your search based on your sectors of interest, your specific degree discipline, and your preferred opportunity type by applying the relevant filters. That way, you can craft your game plan before your visit to get all the good stuff. By that I mean, you can do research on your target organisations to get employers’ interest… not just the freebies.
The event offers students a vibrant and dynamic environment to seek substantial connections and resources, reflecting on the Careers Service’s aim to inspire and empower you on your self-development journey. From experience, I can tell you that they are thoroughly dedicated to connecting you with only legitimate employers and to giving you the confidence you need to achieve your goals.
If this is your first time attending this kind of event, there will be a ‘Getting Started’ zone where the Careers Service staff will help you navigate the fair, approach the employers and provide information about the extra resources and opportunities they offer. Also, knowing how stimulation can get overwhelming, there will always be friendly staff around to guide you, as well as a dedicated quiet zone to let you decompress and recollect in peace.
Don’t miss out on what you might discover.
The Discover Careers Fair will be running from 7-9 October, 1-6pm, in McEwan Hall, Bristo Square, Edinburgh. Find out more information here.
