Flying profits for Edinburgh Airport after record year

Edinburgh Airport has announced record profits for 2024, reaching £144m, a significant increase from their 2023 figure of £88m.

2024 was the airport’s busiest year, with passenger numbers reaching 15.8m, a 10 per cent increase from 2023.

This comes as Edinburgh expanded its flight range this year, including new flights by US airline JetBlue to New York and Boston.

This summer, Edinburgh Airport became the first in Scotland to relax the long-standing 100ml liquid rule, allowing passengers to take two litres of liquids through security.

The record profits follow a year of substantial investments in new security scanners and aircraft taxiways, as well as restaurants, shops, and bars.

The existing bar BrewDog has been expanded, while a new Sainsbury’s and Argos outlet have opened. There have also been new airport openings for Italian chain PizzaExpress, and Korean fried chicken specialists Seoul Bird.

Despite record passenger numbers, one second-year student has said “the airport’s never been too crowded” for him, adding that queues are often quicker at Edinburgh compared with other airports.

The airport remains popular with students, with one second-year student from India describing the airport as “well connected” and “comfortable”, adding it “seems surprisingly larger on the inside.”
