Adrienne Lenker’s 6th solo studio album, Bright Future, came out on the 22nd of March 2024. The intention of the recording session, fully on tape, was to explore the songs with no expectations which allows the album to be saturated with intimacy and vulnerability. Through the twelve tracks she gracefully explores memories and emotions from her life, while also universal themes such as grief, love and the passage of time.
The first song, ‘Real House’ is about love, the purity of childhood and the passing of time. To open with this song is beautifully vulnerable. Not only the creaking piano and eerie violin but then the lyric “Do you remember running?”. She craves to return to this carefree joy: “That / your love is all I want” is a surrender to emotion as she pleads to be safe, held by motherly love. The song feels like the battlefield in her fight against the passage of time and loss of innocence.
At the core of the album is the song ‘Sadness as a Gift’, a love letter to her past relationship encompassing the universality of loss. “Chance has shut her shining eyes” is beautiful yet devastating — there’s no denial in the hardship of change but that doesn’t dull the value of the memories. The song is a gift dedicated to the delicate yet tumultuous balance of devastation and appreciation. “Seasons go so fast” — but maybe change can also be a gift.
‘Free Treasure’ explores the beauty and ethereal magic of love. Lenker writes “I hope we all can know love like this one,” she added, “Full of ‘understanding, patience and pleasure, time and attention and love without measure.’” It fills you with warmth and hope and is truly an appreciation song to love and life.
The final song ‘Ruined’ is a plaintive cry to the trappings of human emotions. Whilst many of the songs in the album explore the balance between sadness and appreciation of love, Lenker here with the repetition of “You come around, I’m ruined” explores the all-encompassing and oppressive nature that relationships can hold.
Lenker has said her favourite songs are the ones that hold many meanings and at different times they can mean different things; the melodies, her rich incredible voice and the lyrics weave together as she teaches that life can be messy but equally beautiful.
