As the famous Mean Girls quote goes, “In girl world, Halloween is the one night a year when a girl can dress like a total slut, and no other girls can say anything about it.” So this Halloween are you going as a sexy mouse like Karen Smith, or a scary bride like Cady Heron?
Halloween is a week of wearing exciting, unique, and funny costumes, but how do you create the greatest outfit? And how do you piece it together? If you are stumped for ideas, fear no more, I will guide you through the ins and outs of Halloween costumes 2025.
- Funny ideas
Lorax: Join the craze by stuffing an orange suit with pillows and adding a yellow moustache.
Highland cows: You’re in Scotland so take in its culture, find a highland cow hat in any of Edinburgh’s souvenir shops (I did this last year, great success!)
Minion: Paint yourself yellow and DIY a pair of goggles and bam!
- Classic but good ideas
Cowgirl/Cowboy: Grab denim jeans or a skirt lying around, pair it with a tied shirt, add a cheap cowboy hat and boots, and finalise the look with a drawn on moustache!
Pirate: An easy to put together outfit which has a great effect, all you need to have is a pirate hat and bandana, partnered with a white top and bottoms.
Disney princesses: All you need is a coloured corset matching your chosen princess, and pair it with a long flowy skirt and crown to create the perfect Disney princess.
- Group ideas
Mean Girls: Transform yourself into ‘The plastics’, whether that’s wearing a pink outfit paired with a skirt, or dressing as their classic Halloween trio of a mouse, black cat and bunny.
The Real Spice Girls: This is a different outtake on the classic ‘Spice Girls’ group costume, instead dressing yourself and your friends as a variety of spices.
Rhyme Without Reason: Grab a partner and come up with the most rogue and random duo, such as: Kim K and Hemmingway; hitchhike and Magic Mike; ballerina and hyena; rapper and napper. Go wild and see what you can rhyme.
The Incredibles: Grab four friends and all dress in a red top with a sketched incredible logo, coupled with black boots, red tights and black face masks to create the iconic family look.
- Last minute ideas
Bunch of grapes: grab yourself a packet of purple/green balloons and pin them to a coloured top.
“My Roman Empire”: Thinking back on the trend, create a toga from a sheet and make a ‘still thinking about it’ sign
Leopard: It is easy to come across leopard print in your wardrobe or charity shops, add some ears and you have yourself a leopard
Sim: DIY a green diamond to create the perfect plumbob
Bad news/Newsflash: Find leftover newspaper and stick it to your outfit
Whether you’re artistic in DIYing the props for your outfit, running to Edinburgh Bargain Store, or one of Edinburgh’s many charity shops, I’m sure your Halloween costumes will be spooktacular this year.
