Acting as a surprise companion release to the lead single, ‘Audrey Hepburn’, off her upcoming third studio album, ‘You, You, You’ by Maisie Peters has already racked up 350,000 more streams and — honestly — should have been the lead.
The song contains all the typical facets of Peters’ penmanship: emotional intimacy, diaristic storytelling, and a reference to “baby blues.” Peters’ pen could, at points, still use a touch of work, but within ‘You, You, You’ she masterfully colours poignant bluntness and vulnerability with hues of masochistic obsession; “I sleep about you / Dream of you two having sex / I breathe about you / Yeah, your name lives in my chest.’” This provides a haunting introspection into Peters’ unfolding turmoil, whilst the repetition of the titular “you, you, you” throughout the song further accentuates the inability to move on that she grapples with.
Peters’ evolving lyricism is complemented by the production: the synths, guitar, and backing layers build up throughout the song but never overpower. Instead, the production provides an almost echo-like effect that demonstrates the lingering nature of her feelings.‘You, You, You’ marks a shift from the full-blown pop performance we saw in The Good Witch and sees Peters re-connecting with her acoustic roots that initially shaped her rise to prominence. Here, she has excellently cemented her position as a veteran of the folk-pop genre and demonstrated that the best of Maisie Peters is yet to come.
