Another relegation battle for Spurs?

After narrowly escaping relegation last season, Tottenham Hotspur currently find themselves dead last in the Premier League. Failing to score in their first four fixtures, the team went into their fifth game with more points than goals.

With last year’s relegation battle continuing to the final minute, and after consecutive 17th place finishes, it seems as though Tottenham’s relegation has been a long time coming. Grappling with continuing loss of players to injury, and significant departures over the summer, this shaky start is not completely unexpected but given the poor show so far this season, it is no wonder most fans think this is the year Spurs fail to avoid relegation.

Roberto de Zerbi’s side seem to still be getting into the swing of things – not what you want to be hearing five games into a season, and immediately before an extended international break.

Tottenham seemed incapable of scoring goals, taking until their most recent game with too many shots on target before finally scoring the first two consolation goals at their home loss against Aston Villa.

However, the start of a season is not a reliable indicator of how the season will go, especially not for Tottenham. Last season, under Thomas Frank, the side won three out of five of their first Premier League fixtures before proceeding to then have a miserable season that left them three points away from the relegation zone.

Their successful transfer season provided Tottenham with an influx of new players, and therefore potential to bring them out of their slump. With the season just beginning, the team have clearly needed time to collect themselves, but fans can’t help but hope that after the international break they come back a complete and competitive side.

And while Spurs fans wish they supported a succeeding team, it would do them good not to forget that the U21s and U18s sit at the top of their tables, while Spurs Women are running in second! A significant improvement from the men’s team’s 20th place, if you ask me.
