Yes, waking up one hour earlier, meal prepping and creating a daily schedule for yourself will improve your life but I think nothing is more enriching than my philosophy of ‘go to one random thing a week.’
This philosophy started around a year ago when my friend asked me to come to a student play with her. At the time, I thought there was nothing I would want to do less than sit for two hours and watch a shabby production clearly created and performed by students. Yes, I was not wrong about the play being a little unpolished — but on the whole it was an extremely enjoyable evening. Doing something that was out the norm for me made me feel content (and a little smug) with myself — instead of an evening of TV, I had just watched a play. In addition to the feeling of accomplishment, my friendship with my friend who had dragged me there properly began. We had inside jokes about that play for a long time after!
When you attend something that you normally would not, you open multiple doors to new interests, friendships and prospects open up in front of you. Since the play, I have tried to never say no to a whimsical suggestion, as I know how fruitful the experience can turn out to be.
So, say yes to that history talk ran by the HCA, to the symphony orchestra’s concert, to yoga society’s taster session. By saying yes to new or random events, the world will reveal itself to you, and your horizons will widen.
