Miliband’s Energy Policies are a Green Flag for Unions

Ed Miliband has clung on once again. Miliband managed to save his job as Energy Secretary in the recent cabinet reshuffle despite rumoured pressure from Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ growth agenda.

Miliband still stands firm on his green job’s agenda as the route to not only energy security, but in his own words, “the economic opportunity of the 21st century.”

Miliband’s manifesto is twofold: to resolve the economic inequality in Britain whilst simultaneously tackling the climate crisis. In classic Miliband fashion, this is not his first rodeo in the role. Having previously held the position from 2008-2010, returning to the Secretary of State position, he says, “feels like coming home.”

Miliband’s return was thankfully positive for others too; his clean green jobs have the support of the unions. Where previously policy has failed to garner support due to oil and gas workers being neglected as the ‘victims’ of the green transition, Miliband will now help those workers by putting £20m into bespoke careers training.

Miliband’s policies also include key employment rights that the unions have been petitioning for. For example, he has fixed a key loophole in employment rights legislation, meaning that those working 12 miles offshore will now benefit from the full workers’ rights, hopefully drawing more workers into offshore wind. Additionally, any company that wants to receive the government’s clean energy bonus will have to provide concrete evidence that they have good industrial relations and a recognised union for employees.

The chancellor’s growth agenda puts pressure on Miliband’s policies, such as the decision of whether to re-open the legal ruling that is stopping new oil fields being opened. But with the support of the unions behind him, things are looking good for Miliband, so let us hope that he is able to stay away from any untoward sandwiches.
