Ditching the puffer: layering for winter

A puffer jacket can be found in every Edinburgh student’s wardrobe, something that we hold onto against the unpredictable weather the city throws our way. It is like a wearable duvet: warm, cosy, and an easy grab when the winds pick up on George Square. But maybe that is all there is to a puffer?

They tend to gobble you up and hide your carefully colour coordinated outfit, with the annoyance hitting us like a child being asked to cover up their Halloween costume because it’s ‘cold’ outside. The question is, how do you stay warm this season without looking like a marshmallow? You learn the art of thoughtful layering.

Now, layering is the strategy to look put together without a ‘bulky’ look and can be achieved by starting with a solid base: a breathable simple thermal top like Uniqlo’s Heattech range could be your saviour. Yet, for those of us who hate clothes that cling too tightly on the skin, cotton T-shirts and plain tank tops from your favorite shop work just as well. The trick is to layer smartly: warmth can always be added elsewhere.

The middle layer is where style meets substance. This piece elevates your look while promising coziness. Think cashmere sweaters from Uniqlo, COS if you like minimal designs, or cute cardigans and oversized jumpers from Zara. For those of us who want a slightly more serious vibe, quarter-zip fleeces from the North Face and Next, or fitted turtleneck sweaters from Uniqlo and H&M could be our moral support for networking events, presentations, and seminars this season.

For the final touch, to make your outfit look more intentional, scarves are essential. Chunky knits, patterned cashmere, or lightweight mufflers instantly add warmth and character to ‘low-effort’ university outfits. Even fuzzy socks are a great way to keep cozy while commuting to university, or for those freezing walks around the meadows, especially when mindfully tucked under shoes.

And for the most dreaded part—what to wear on top? Well, it doesn’t need to be a voluminous jacket. Urban Outfitter’s Paco Parka, Uniqlo’s Puffer tech, or Superdry’s jackets avoid the bulky look and give you a polished, curated touch to your outfit– warmth and style, all in one.

This winter, do not let the puffer win. With a little bit of layering know-how, you’ll be all set for lectures, library marathons, and coffee-runs without sacrificing style.
