The fight for the left: Green Party councillors defecting to Your Party

In October 2025, three Green Party council members from Glasgow made the controversial decision to leave the Green Party and join the new political upstart, Your Party. This move demonstrates the rivalry that has recently emerged between the Greens and Your Party for the Left-wing vote, with both parties in danger of getting in each other’s way. The parties have a similar voter base and, therefore, feel the need to somehow differentiate themselves from one another.

One defining distinction was provided by the rebelling councillors, who stated that the Green Party is a “party of compromise and concession.” This implies that Your Party will be a better choice for voters, as they will remain loyal to their values, regardless of the situation. Upon analysing the rhetoric and policies of both parties, it is clear that the Green Party presents itself as a more pragmatic and policy-driven institution than its counterpart.

Since Zack Polanski became the leader of the Greens, the image of the organisation has changed from a focus on climate to one of affordability. There has been mention of increases in capital gains tax, a wealth tax, a Universal Basic income, drug legalisation and electoral reform—all of these policy announcements coming within his first two months. On the other hand, after three months, Your Party’s main policy contribution has been the constant pressure over the UK’s role in the continued genocide in Gaza. This cause is a commendable one, yet the lack of a true policy platform exposes Your Party to be a protest party rather than a true, credible opposition to the rising threat of Reform and the bumbling mediocrity of the Labour Government.

The key reason why Your Party should not be trusted with the Left-wing vote is their disastrous foreign policy. At best, it can be described as ‘internationally naïve’ and at worst, it can be argued to regress foreign relations by a century. I am not saying that Your Party’s policy on Gaza is wrong, rather that when focusing on the Gaza issue, the party has forgotten about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. When asked in an interview about her views on the Russian invasion, Zarah Sultana (co-founder of Your Party) went on a rant about working-class Russians and Ukrainians, and how they both dislike Zelensky. She seems to care more about how the arms dealers involved in the conflict exemplify capitalist greed than the actual war itself. This obsession with Socialist dogma undermines the need for military assistance that Ukraine relies on so heavily for survival.

Furthermore, when asked about NATO, Sultana expressed her desire to leave the organisation, labelling it an “imperialist war machine.” Criticisms of NATO are valid; however, to believe that leaving NATO is good for the Ukrainians is preposterous and shows Sultana’s ignorance of the world stage. Without NATO, countries like Russia and China would let their imperialist desires go wild, bullying smaller states such as Taiwan and Finland into submission. Sultana and Corbyn are well-intentioned, but they simply cannot be trusted with diplomacy on the world stage. They are ideological absolutists who cannot look past their stubborn, out-of-touch theories when designing public and international policy.

Therefore, as the Your Party political organisation is more style over substance, they cannot be trusted to represent Left-wing voters in the UK. Each MP that represents the party is headstrong and incapable of the compromises needed for positive change. This natural divide has already been shown by the rift between the two co-leaders (Sultana and Corbyn) over something as petty as the membership price. A party that is divided can never truly be strong, and the Left in the UK needs a strong, united party to represent its views. A vote for Your Party is a vote for an organisation that will stand in the way of progress; a vote for the Greens is a vote for a political party that has the pragmatism and nuance needed to truly fight off the rise of fascism in this country and bring hope back to British society.
