Edinburgh Fine Art Students showcase their work in an innovative Marchmont Gallery
Run by ECA Fine Art students, Shop the Studio held its first student gallery last week. Intimately set in a Marchmont flat, the space was filled with creativity, inspiration, and endless chatter, bringing warmth to a chilled November evening.
Upon arrival, I was immediately struck by the crowd that had gathered just thirty minutes after the event began. I made my way through the long gallery hall, filled to the ceiling with prints and originals, then turned to enter another large gallery space. Not even a corner was left blank.
Styles and media varied, but one common choice created congruence throughout the space: most pieces were monochromatic or nearing it, drawing attention to artists’ use of tone in every composition. Spaced between a multiplicity of black and white, vibrant red canvases pulled the viewer back into a coloured reality.
The gallery was followed by a pop-up sale on Friday at the ECA sculpture court. Red stickers were provided for viewers to express their interest in buying prints at the sale. With final touches including drinks served in individually stamped cups, the gallery was made to feel personal and welcoming, a format I hope to see repeated.
