BREAKING George Square blocked off by police due to Storm Bram

A large part of George Square was blocked off overnight from the evening of 9 December due to debris falling from a building.

A student witness told The Student “At around nine this morning [10 December] I walked past to see the area taped off with police tape and a combination of university security and police.”

“I couldn’t tell what the issue was but the tape covered quite a wide area.”

The tape blocked cars from the area from the Chrystal Macmillan building to Appleton Tower, as well as blocking off the area parallel to 50 George Square, though pedestrians were still able to enter.

A Police Scotland spokesperson told Edinburgh News: “We were made aware around 6.35pm on Tuesday, 9 December, 2025 of debris falling from a building on George Square in Edinburgh.”

“No one was injured and an area has been cordoned off as a precaution.”

Police officers patrolled the area overnight but removed the tape on the morning of 10 December.

Storm Bram brought wind gusts of up to 55 mph to Edinburgh on 9 December, resulting in the Met Office issuing a yellow warning.
