Awards Season Fashion: Modern Twists on Traditional Sensibility

Awards season has begun and the stars are looking better than ever. On 11 January Nikki Glaser hosted the Golden Globes at the Beverly Hilton for the second year in a row. Following on from the elegance of the Critics Choice Awards, stylists have chosen to stick with old school glamour, leading to an overall return to how awards shows should be attended.

Floor length gowns and dapper suits graced the red carpet; there was a return to traditional silhouettes and fabrics, with my personal favourite looks being those which stuck to a more conventional colour scheme in blacks, whites and creams. One look I was immediately drawn to was Emily Blunt in Louis Vuitton and Jimmy Choo, teasing us with a glimpse into her character’s style in the much anticipated sequel to The Devil Wears Prada. Her double tiered dress was a white, structured one-shoulder, embellished with diamanté buttons asymmetrically going along her covered arm. This structured top half of the dress had a slightly higher neckline and sat on top of a sleek, fitted, floor-length skirt. Her hair was styled in a glamorous up-do that revealed her earrings – matching the buttons on her dress.

Love seems to be in the air among the celebs this year, with a return to attending these awards shows with a partner aligning with the old school style. A-list couples seen at the event included Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner, Benny Blanco and Selena Gomez, Adam Brody and Leighton Meester. Maybe a boyfriend has become the perfect accessory, regardless of what Vogue says.

I also cannot neglect the buzz around Gen Z’s current favourite on-screen couple: Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams, from new romance Heated Rivalry. They showed up to the Golden Globes looking as dapper as ever. Williams graced the red carpet in a white shirt and blazer combo paired with black trousers, and embellished with a white silk cummerbund, which seems to be becoming a trend for the male stars. He finished off the look with a gold snake necklace and gold hoop earrings, giving it a chic androgynous element, a juxtaposition to the tradition of his overall outfit. His co-star met the traditional air Williams went for, dressed in a full black suit, white shirt and black tie. Though, the slightly higher waistband of his trousers, the aviator sunglasses, and silver feather broach elevated his outfit in a similar way to Williams, giving both looks a modern, edgier twist.

The new takes on traditional style that celebrities are bringing to this awards season heightened the drama of the shows, and is giving them a new energy that was definitely needed. After the turn out seen both here and at the Critics Choice Awards I can promise you I’ll be keeping up to date with the rest of the ceremonies to come.
