Single Review: ‘Your Favorite Toy’ by Foo Fighters

Rating: 2.5 out of 5.

Rock veterans, Foo Fighters, return after a recent turbulent period with their new single ‘My Favorite Toy’ off of their forthcoming album. It is an energetic, tightly packed song that harks back to the early 2000s garage rock revival through its riffs, ‘nanana’ vocal hook and The-Killers-esque synth.

The song pulsates with energy, in part through its drum parts played by new addition Ilan Rubin; his time with Nine Inch Nails brings a fresh layer to the sound that works well with the bass’ hit-ons. Dave Grohl also reliably delivers his gritty, iconic vocals with much intensity.

However, the heavy distortion on the mix is a bit over-the-top, adding too much bite that feels rough and grating. Though this might be intentional in line with the garage-rock feel, the mix still seems sub-par compared to the band’s previous releases. Furthermore, the lyrical content is a bit hollow; though catchy and serving the song well, it is directionless and vague. Overall, this song feels like a shadow of youthful energy rather than an accurate depiction of it.

Despite this, the song’s almost-frustratingly catchy melodies and nostalgic sound of carefree summers, makes it a great tune to be sung during their upcoming summer stadium tour.
