Rating: 4 out of 5.

Robert Johnson, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain, Amy Winehouse… all part of the infamous 27 club. In this tribute concert, the most famous works of these artists come alive, and one gets to experience these famous hits in an electrifying, live setting.

This was a respectful yet lively performance that showed the band’s authentic reverence to these artists. Brief commentaries were threaded in between covers of the 27’s clubs most famous songs – “maybe you don’t have to be tortured to be talented; everyone has their demons.” The band approached these figures not just as untouchable rock legends, but as real people.

That being said, there were many rock cliches present – the show really leaned into the ‘sex, drugs, and rock and roll’ mindset. The band on stage also put in their all into the performative aspect of the show, that although was wildly entertaining, sometimes felt a bit over-the-top, with oversexualisation of the singers at times.

Nevertheless, the covers themselves were incredible. The performers really embodied the essence of the singers of the 27 Club, with Cobain’s iconic rasp recreated with both originality and fidelity, while Lesley Williams channelled Amy Winehouse’s magnetic, majestic aura, filling the room with her presence. The Australia-based band was equally talented too, providing a solid backdrop to these incredible voices, and at times providing tasteful solos between songs.

Ultimately, 27 Club created a thrilling live experience for fans of these artists. Notably, the show does not attempt to delve in depth into any one musician, but instead covers a few of the most famous hits that were created from this ‘club.’ Hence this show may appeal to an older audience who would like the opportunity to witness their favourite songs performed live, or for more general music fans who would enjoy seeing some of rock and roll’s most iconic music recreated on stage.

27 Club is running until 30 August at Gordon Aikman Theatre at Assembly George Square. Buy tickets here.
