Edinburgh’s tram drivers travelled to Warsaw last weekend to compete in the 12th European Tram Driving Championships.
Teams from across Europe and Australia gathered for the annual event, where drivers participated in various challenges to test their driving ability.
26 teams of drivers congregated to compete, including Edinburgh tram drivers Emma White and Jason Muffat, who placed 20th.
Through a multitude of activities ranging from tram-bowling to basketball, the drivers were assessed on their spatial awareness, control, and technique.
In a smooth-stopping round, drivers’ skills were measured by the amount spilled from a bowl of water attached to the vehicle.
It was team Prague who triumphed over their 25 competitors, achieving a total of 6000 points, consisting of 2825 points in the women’s category, and 3175 points in the men’s category.
Despite being home to the largest operational tram network in the world, Melbourne placed 25th overall, one place ahead of London.
The event was hosted in Warsaw to honour the city’s 160 year-old tram network, as an estimated 80,000 people watched the livestream of the championship alongside a live crowd in Poland’s capital.
