Chelsea signed Cole Palmer from Manchester City in August 2023. In his first season, his stellar performances made him one of Chelsea’s most reliable attacking players for the coming future. He ended the 2023-24 season with 22 goals and 11 assists in 33 appearances. Palmer has established himself as one of Chelsea’s key players.
Palmer joined Chelsea on a long-term deal until 2033. Recently, he signed a one-year extension with improved terms. This signifies his status as a key player for the Blues. Chelsea are in dire need for change after their performance in the 2025-26 PL season. With the appointment of Xabi Alonso as their manager in May 2026, the management has offered extensions to various players namely Reece James, João Pedro, Pedro Neto and signing Morgan Rogers.
The club finished tenth in the last season, missing out on European football. This season offers Chelsea an opportunity for redemption. With the signing of Morgan Rogers, Alonso said: “One of his best qualities is that he is flexible. He plays in that pocket position, close to the striker, close to our number ten — but he has also played on the right side even though he is more used to coming from the left. He feels he is enjoying his game, his flow, and I’m sure he will have good connections with the other players around him. If we get those connections right, that will be a great step forward in the quality of our game.”
Chelsea appear to be rebuilding the team based on personal connections, players who are cohesive and have a similar mindset on the pitch. Rogers and Palmer have been friends since their early years, playing together is a dream for them which the blues have made come true. But having a childhood connection does not guarantee an effective partnership.
But is this enough? Being a part of the big six and the reigning champions of the Club World Cup, Chelsea have a reputation to uphold. Missing out on European football is a big setback to their stature. The team is performing decently well in this season and need to uphold the same momentum in order to maintain a top-5 position.
Palmer has proved to be reliable for Chelsea over the years, but his injuries continue to hold him back. Securing his future may be the right step, but individual talent cannot carry the team forward alone. The team needs to convert this individual brilliance into collective success.
