Short rant: Hating children is not cool

I will be the first to admit that, in the past, I have made passing comments claiming that “I hate children” and less polite iterations of the same sentiment. I get it. You’re on a plane and the baby two rows behind you won’t stop screaming. You’re walking down the street and a slow-walking toddler is blocking the path. But come on. Do these minor inconveniences really warrant a hatred of children? After all, we were all children once. We probably all threw a tantrum in the supermarket every now and then.

Is it really fair to hate a person (because yes, they are people), just because they are not at an age where they have the intelligence to communicate in the same way? I don’t think so. No matter how irritating you may find them, children deserve the same respect you would give to any adult. In fact they probably require more kindness than grown-ups, considering that they are still developing and learning.

By all means, don’t have children if you don’t want to. But your personal choice should not permit outright intolerance of younger generations for simply existing. Next time you have something nasty to say about children, be quiet. You used to be a child. How would younger you feel if they heard you say that you hated them?
