Why are you saving seats?

If you do this, you infuriate not only me, but a large proportion of the student population here. Seat savers. Why do you guys do this?

We have all been there. Trying our best to find a seat in the afternoon. Going up and down the flights of stairs, in order to find a seat. I will leave out a description, as I presume all of you have been here. And, I guess that some of you have been unsuccessful before. Having to leave the library, in a further hunt for a seat. If the time is after 2 pm, I give Teviot a once over, and if unsuccessful, I generally return home.

Is there any form of validity to seat saving? And are some seats saved better? No to the first question, yes to the second. Come on guys, go big or go home! Why just save a seat with a phone charger or a water bottle? Put your coat there and maybe your laptop case. Make it look like you’ve just gone to the toilet. If you do just leave a charger on a desk, I will move it. You do not own that seat. Now, I recognise that neither do I. But if I am there looking for a seat that is more than you have done. I like to get to the library early. Normally about 9ish. And if my friends asked me to save them a seat, I would say no. Just because I get up early, should you benefit from this? But also, it is not fair. So no, I will not be engaging in this.

The image at the top of the screen was taken at 8:56, and when I left at 10:30, the person ‘sat there’ had yet to return. I watched at least 10 people attempt to sit in that seat, which is reserved with two books and two pens (I would have maybe left like a water bottle, but again, I don’t partake in this so I don’t understand).

Another major problem I have is when it encroaches near me. Say I am sitting down and the two seats on my left are vacant. Someone comes and takes the seat furthest away from me, and places a book on the seat between us, in order to save it. I literally want to cry. I know that people walking past may assume that I am a seat saver, but sadly, I have merely been caught up in this, rather than engaging in the practice myself. But, the people walking past me don’t know this. And as such, I am branded with the title ‘seat saver’.

With the end of the semester rapidly approaching, with final essays and exams just around the corner, most of us are rapidly trying to get as much work, and as such, the library is also in its busiest season of the year.  I would say that the size of the university has possibly, outgrown the main library. So to double up on seats, so that others can get a seat without having to be there, is a practice that needs to end.

I am not going to contradict myself entirely, but I might a little bit. If this was the start of term, and you put a book on the seat next to you for 10 minutes so your friend who is running next to you can have the seat, that might be ok. But at this point of the year, leaving your stuff for over an hour (when you have evidently gone to class), is not ok. It’s a selfish practice, and should not be done.
