Backstage at The Chiaroscuro Fashion Show

The Chiaroscuro Fashion Show in support of Everyone’s Invited was hosted on 2 April 2026 by The University of Edinburgh’s Fashion Society at the Biscuit Factory. Yet the work did not start here, and I was lucky enough to be a part of this process.

Chiaroscuro is an artistic technique composed of strong contrasts between light and dark, and the outfits definitely captured this. Each designer had a different interpretation, ranging from monochrome tones to energetic colours. Nerves and excitement bubbled around the Biscuit Factory as the models got ready into their outfits. At the dress rehearsal, the show clearly formed its shape: the walks were perfected, each outfit altered to the inch, and the curtains were ready to be walked through. Amara was my designer and she did a wonderful job, as my outfit received so many compliments. The numerous fittings ensured that there were no issues on the day, which was necessary for everything running smoothly. The design was a combination of black lace and flowers printed onto white fabric, merged to match the theme of Chiaroscuro. Amara’s designs captured the theme in a sophisticated way, and therefore the brief meant that this should be mirrored in my walk — a slower pace to other models.

The day of the show went swimmingly, and I loved every second. The excitement from the audience did not falter, with all eyes fixated on each piece. The buzz post-show clearly showed this too; I saw it first hand in the room, when I found my lovely friends who watched the show (thank you for the flowers!).

But how did the process start? After seeing the Fashion Society’s Instagram, I submitted my online application which asked for a headshot, some information on experience, and basic measurements — an effortless way to get involved. After that, I was lucky enough to hear back.

The day of the audition quickly rolled around, and I must admit it was the most daunting Quaker Studios has ever looked. But as soon as I walked in, the lovely Jackson and Alice welcomed me, and proceeded to explain the audition process very clearly. The audition consisted of answering three questions at the panel before demonstrating my walk — one interpretive and one stereotypical. Sounds simple, right? It may have seemed less so at the time, but in hindsight there was nothing to worry about. I ended the audition with a quick interview where I was asked, “what colour would you say your walk is?” An interesting question which had me pondering, before I responded, “dark blue.” A subtle yet confident colour, perfectly matching the theme of Chiaroscuro. Not long after the audition, I received the fabulous notification that I had been accepted as a model!

So, next year when the Fashion Society hosts their annual Fashion Show, why not come along and observe all the lovely designs? Or even better, participate yourself — create your own design, work with behind the scenes team, or like me, walk the show.
