Fringe 2023: Yellow Corners

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Did you enjoy being thirteen? Well, you’re about to experience it all again in the best possible way. This one-woman show is a spectacular showcase of the angst of becoming ‘officially a teenager’ with all the chaotic musings you could expect. Attempts at coolness and becoming more interesting through some tactical kidnapping; keeping a diary in the hope of being the next Anne Frank (but only in a work of literature kind of way); or ruling yourself out of being the star of a Jaqueline Wilson book because both parents are still alive – these thoughts are hilariously posed in Yellow Corners.

Both masterfully written and acted, this show has you in stitches one minute and on the verge of tears the next. The performance acknowledges everything you didn’t write in your diary because you feared it would in fact become the next historical artifact studied in schools. Therefore, its lack of inhibitions is brilliantly refreshing.

Combining both coming of age insecurities and intense ‘the world revolves around me’ narcissism, Yellow Corners is a delightfully raw insight into a world everyone has already lived. As a glimpse into that stage of life where independence is all you crave but you don’t even get to decide what you’re having for dinner, it exudes nostalgia. The performer is extremely likeable, which makes this performance as absolute must see.

With a full house on opening night, this one-woman monologue of every intrusive thought you have ever had is sure to be a huge Fringe success story. This performance is akin to opening up and reading your childhood diary but with the good, the bad and the ugly bits all left in.

Yellow Corners is on at theSpaceTriplex – Studio at 7:15pm on 18 and 19 August. Tickets are available here: https://tickets.edfringe.com/whats-on/yellow-corners.
