Nominations open for University Senate

Nominations are open for academic staff at the University of Edinburgh wanting to join the University’s senate.

Staff have until 12pm on Wednesday 27 March to nominate themselves for a position.

The Senate is the supreme academic body at the University of Edinburgh.

Its duties include approving the award of degrees, promoting research, as well as setting policies on teaching and learning.

In its most recent meeting, the Senate discussed issues including the University’s climate strategy plan and long-term curriculum changes.

In 2024, there are 96 academic staff positions available.

Current academic and research staff in post from 31 January 2024 are eligible to nominate themselves for election to the Senate.

Staff members who hold an ex officio Senate position (those entitled to a seat because of the job they hold within the University) are not eligible to stand for election.

As a measure to improve representation of early-career staff members, a total of nine Senate positions will be prioritised for staff members with early-career academic positions.

After the nomination process is complete, staff will have the opportunity to vote for their preferred senate members online.

Voting will open at 9am on Wednesday 17 April and close at 12pm on Wednesday 1 May.

There are approximately 300 representatives in the Senate.

The membership is composed of 200 elected academic staff members (100 of which are non-professional), 30 elected student members, and up to 80 ex-officio members.

Ex-officio members include Heads of Schools, Heads of College, Vice-Principals, Assistant Principals, and College academic staff nominees such as College Deans.

The Edinburgh University Students’ Association (EUSA) is responsible for organising the election of the Senate’s 30 student members.

The Senate holds a minimum of three meetings per year, and is chaired by Principal and Vice Chancellor Peter Mathieson.
