Pleasance Courtyard — the heart of the Fringe

In term-time, Pleasance Courtyard is unassuming. It is reserved for gym goers and University societies, and tends to be a quieter area of campus.

However, in August, the space is unrecognisable. Transformed into three bars, with tens of performance spaces in rooms previously reserved for writer’s meetings and dance classes, Pleasance Courtyard is a hub of activity.

It boasts several food trucks to satisfy cravings on long Fringe days, whether that be cheese toasties, gyros, burgers, pizza, noodles, or a sweet treat — between the vendors at Pleasance Courtyard, you are sure to find something you’ll enjoy.

During my visit last week, I opted for a burger and truffle and parmesan fries at Smash n’ Stack. The burger was delicious, with plenty of cheese on top and laden with gherkins. The fries were the highlight for me, as they came in a big portion and were lathered in truffle mayo and parmesan. Vegetarian and vegan options are available (and are plentiful around the different vendors).

I would highlight that the food is somewhat expensive: £13 for a burger (without fries) and a further £4-6 on fries is quite a lot for street food. The cost of a pint sits at around £7, which is quite high, especially on a student budget.

The bars serve a variety of draft beers and other alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. I would like to put it on record here that The Student’s (my) drink of the Fringe this year is the Stewart Brewing Session IPA. Also, I would recommend heading down to the back of the Courtyard to find Arthur’s Bar, which feels hidden away and has a more relaxed vibe than the bustling main area.

The Courtyard is also (thankfully) weather-proof, with overhead canopies to keep the inevitable Scottish rain out.

If you are willing to splash out on a meal in between shows, or if you just want to hang out and get a pint in the middle of the action, Pleasance Courtyard is a buzzing venue at the heart of the Fringe.
