Edinburgh staple Union Brew Lab to close after 12 years

Union Brew coffee bar permanently closed on 28 February 2024.

The café was popular amongst Edinburgh’s students, due to its proximity to the University of Edinburgh’s main campus, as well as its central location in Old Town.

The space was bought by Origin Coffee Roasters, who plan to open in the spring of this year.

Union Brew had occupied the South College Street café for 12 years. A statement on their website does not give the reason for closure, but simply says the business wants to “thank everyone for the support and memories”.

Origin Coffee Roasters is based in Porthleven, Cornwall. The Edinburgh café will be its first Scottish branch, with other branches currently in Bristol and London.

Origin Coffee Roasters say they are “excited to be part of the next chapter of this incredible coffee shop” and hope to honour the legacy of Union Brew in Edinburgh.
