Leith is the most underrated area in Edinburgh. Despite boasting a rich array of coffee shops, bars and eateries, students, particularly from the University of Edinburgh seem to have completely neglected this bustling part of the city.
Perhaps this is Leith’s main asset; alternative cafes stand shoulder to shoulder with working class pubs. Unlike the rest of Edinburgh, it feels like the alternative scene has not been co-opted by middle-class students and Bruntsfield yummy mummies. Leith, in this way, has a varied identity, torn between different cultures and classes in a way that feels more authentic than the more polished and student-catered parts of central Edinburgh who consciously mould themselves to the tastes of students. Leith seems to cater much more for the locals.
I love Edinburgh, yet Leith is a refreshingly different area of the city which is under utilised; it feels genuinely local yet surprisingly diverse, without trying to conform to the demands of students.
Not to mention it’s also beautiful; sunset in a pub on the harbour is reminiscent of summer in Europe, just a lot colder and with a lot more pints of Tennents.
