Back from across the pond, Czech-born Bianca Cristovao’s stand up catalogues her immigration to the USA: sex, religion, and money-money-money.
Each audience member was asked in the bar beforehand to write down the craziest thing we’ve done for money, so I was expecting a lot of crowd work based on these prompts. However, these were instead thrown in at the end as gags of their own, disappointingly not really adding much to them.
Perhaps as an on average older audience than her usual LA crowd, some of Cristovao’s darker material just didn’t quite land in Edinburgh, although some rewording on these jokes would help it seem less mean to laugh.
Still familiarising herself with the set, there were a few lulls which meant the audience dipped in focus in and out of the story. Nonetheless, the main body of the set is intriguing and silly, performing some rude and absurd life stories explaining her desire to become a gold digger, but apparently the competition is just too fierce.
Gold Digger has multiple performance locations on 10, 14-17, 21-25 Aug as part of the Free Fringe. Tickets available here.
