Villains drag parody show is an excellent blend of classical drag and lyrical brilliance that elicits hysterics from the crowd. Though less polished than their sister show Dizney in Drag, Villains serves a delectable array of positively fabulous classic characters, from Ursula to Cruella De Vil to the mansplaining princes we all know and love.
Protagonist Ville sets out to become a true villain and learn from the best, but unfortunately her performance is the primary hindrance to this shows success. Resembling that of a 2016 youtuber, her performance is painfully millennial and grating. Aside from this, the characters are delightfully eccentric and camp, all possessing excellent wit and vocal ability. All the songs are performed live, which lends to the emotion of the performance, a crucial element to any villain’s monologue.
The show is littered with innuendos and parodied villain songs that cleverly deliver ironic messages about their motivations. But the comical jests are not solely performed by the villains. Those in the audience are at risk of being implored to engage in hilarious dance moves on stage, so be prepared! Following the guide of The Hairy Godmother, who often has something up her skirt, a tale of queer acceptance is subtly narrated, with funny remarks ringing truth in the face of heteronormativity and mockery.
Villains is the perfect show for a classically camp night out, with hilarious gags and stellar lyrics that prove that we do have friends on the other side.
Villains: A Dizney Drag Parody by The Hairy Godmothers is at Assembly George Square: Gordon Aikman Theatre Aug 14, 16, 18, 21, 23, 25.
