Fringe: The Black Blues Brothers

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

The Black Blues Brothers are back for their final year at the Edinburgh Fringe. A traditional mix of acrobatics and physical comedy, the show is soundtracked by jazz and blues standards.

This is one of those shows that is truly fun for the whole family. The babies in front of me and the older couple behind me both seemed to thoroughly enjoy the entire performance. Even though I at times feared for the lives of the troupe, I found their stunts to be fun and fast-paced. While there are only so many new ways a group of five can stack themselves on top of one another, the Black Blues Brothers incorporated interesting props and was well themed enough to negate some of the repetition.

The acrobatics are very physically impressive; after seeing the show I have re-committed to the gym so I too can make a human pyramid with my closest friends. The joy that the performers have is infectious, and it’s a wise choice by the group to bring kids from the audience up on stage for parts of the show.

Overall, The Black Blues Brothers is a joyous display of strength and acrobatics, which delivered on its promise to be fun for the whole family. This is the last year they’re going to be in Edinburgh, so if you’ve been on the fence, make sure to fit them into your schedule in the next week or so.

The Black Blues Brothers are on in the Assembly Rooms Music Hall at 15:10 until the 25.
