Fringe 2024: Married at Fringe Sight

Rating: 2 out of 5.

Married at Fringe Sight presents the opportunity for lucky single individuals to find their perfect partner in a fun gameshow-esque set up. After collecting forms from audience members about their lives, people are picked upon to elaborate and explain their pasts to the two hosts of the show. Whilst this offers a promising concept for hilarious pairings, the comedians themselves rely heavily upon the audience’s response, sometimes making for awkward interactions. Furthermore, more interesting, strange questions could be asked to prompt interesting results and create more comedic pairings.

The pairings themselves are done towards the end of the show after having gotten to know large amounts of the crowd, however the couples barely interact, thus when selecting the ‘best couple’ there is not a lot to go on. Some form of couple’s activities or competitions could be added to rectify this and make what is an amusing scene a far more rib-tickling event.

Whilst the couples chosen are strange and hilarious combinations, there is little effort in the rational behind the pairs other than choosing the whackiest combinations, therefore the show feels quite surface level. Though a brilliant concept, the comedians would do better to tweak elements of the show for further hilarity and would remove the risk of having a slightly drier audience, because the show should be about the skill of the comedians rather than the charisma of the crowd.
