No Place Called Home is an insight into the realities of love and loss amid a world constantly under threat from the climate crisis. The show follows the lives of a young couple finding their way in a new home, combatting financial struggles and the pressure to expand their family in the face of an ever-changing environment.
The arrival of a distant friend forces the three to learn to live in a new, intertwined way, asking themselves the question of whether the life they set out for themselves is still an achievable reality.
The topic of climate change, under which the show is advertised, is skirted around lightly. The message of the performance could have been portrayed in a more overt way to drive the meanings home more clearly, however the subtlety of the messaging contributed to the increasing unspoken threat it dwelled upon.
Five actors portrayed the three main characters, the present and past juxtaposing one another as we see where the two men end up. The actors portray the vulnerability and fragility of the life we take for granted in an intelligent, purposeful way, drawing the audience into their intertwined lives.
No Place Called Home is on at Greenside @ Riddles Court, Willow Studio, Aug 23 and 24.
