TV shows that should not have been cancelled

Watching a TV show and falling in love with it, only to find out that it’s been cancelled, feels like a universal experience for a TV enthusiast. I’ll be highlighting a few shows I think deserve to be brought back.

The Society

This chaotic Lord of the Flies-esque story truly deserved to have another season. It centred around a town where the teenagers go away on a trip and come back to find all other people gone and their access to the outside world closed off. It was renewed in 2020, only to be cancelled later that year, with the reasoning being the COVID pandemic. The potential storylines for this show were endless, and by the end of the first season, there was still so much more I wanted to learn about the characters and everything revolving around the main plot.

I Am Not Okay With This

This coming-of-age story suffered a similar fate to The Society, with it being released around the same time and cancelled in the same statement from the network. This retro-feeling series consisted of short episodes following a teen’s journey of self-discovery, whilst dealing with her emotions, her sexuality, and her newfound superpowers. It was an easy watch, and my only criticism was that it was too short.

Shadow and Bone

After the negative reviews the second season got, this may be an unpopular opinion, but I think that this series deserved more. Having read (and loved) both the book series that were combined to make this Frankenstein of a show, I was sceptical about how it would work, but overall, I must say I was pleasantly surprised. Though not perfect, this atmospheric fantasy creates something new and truly exciting, set in a dark world in which a girl discovers her power to summon light, becoming a beacon of hope for her war-torn country.

Yuri on Ice

I contemplated whether or not to include this as one of my choices, but I thought that it truly deserved its place. The cancellation was recent, and I don’t think I will ever get over it. Simplified, this story is about a figure skater on the verge of retirement, gaining back his confidence, and being coached by his idol. The music, the character development, the pacing—it is truly incredible; even the animation is captivating.
