Spotlight: The Improverts

The University of Edinburgh is host to a variety of talented theatre groups, each with their own special area of interest. But with so much choice, it’s difficult to know where to start. This article takes an in-depth look at one of the Universities longest running groups: the Improverts. With this group the aim is in the name: The Improverts perform explicitly improvised pieces to a weekly audience, taking spontaneous suggestions and creating pieces with laudable wit and flair.

The Improverts themselves are the longest running improv group on campus, offering weekly entertainment since 1989. Over the years, they have nurtured the talent of many successful stars: amongst their alumni are Miles Jupp (Would I Lie to You?) and Maria Bamford (Arrested Development). They offer an opportunity for those looking to refine their improvisation skills in the best environment possible: in front of a live audience! If taking to the stage is not your thing, the group also offers weekly improv workshops, giving you the chance to hone your craft in a less high-stakes setting. Wherever you feel most at home, there is plenty of space for you to nurture your talents with the Improverts.

To find the Improverts, all you have to do is head to the Bedlam Theatre. Located right alongside Main Campus, Bedlam is home to all of the University’s esteemed theatre societies. The theatre itself is the oldest student run-theatre in Britain, opening its doors to students in 1980. The building is set in a beautiful gothic revivalist style and has over one hundred and fifty years of history behind it, making it the perfect venue to strike creative inspiration in aspiring actors.

The purpose of the Improverts is best surmised by their motto: “always different, always funny”. Taking inspiration from shows such as Whose Line is it Anyway, the group prides itself on creating original and fast paced sketches, all while challenging their wits to the extreme. Each performance is guaranteed to offer a unique experience for audiences and performers alike, so it’s never too late to get involved.

You can find the group in their home at Bedlam every Friday at 10:30pm for their stage performances, and every Saturday between 12-2pm for their workshops. For up-to-date information on their upcoming shows, head to their Instagram @theimproverts
