The race between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris have intensified ahead of election day on 5 November.
Vice President Harris’ poll lead has been narrowing with near ties in the vital swing states of Wisconsin, Nevada, Michigan and Pennsylvania.
As election day nears, both Harris and Trump have been visiting so-called “battleground states” to convince still-undecided voters to support their campaign.
Trump picked up a shift at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania in a dig against Kamala Harris, who said she used to work at the fast-food chain.
“I’ve now worked [at McDonald’s] for 15 minutes more than Kamala,” he said, as an attempt to cast doubt over Harris’ claim, despite the chain saying there was no reason to think she didn’t.
Meanwhile, Harris criticised Trump’s use of expletive language when referring to her, saying it “demeans” the role of presidency in an interview with MSNBC.
She added that he has “not earned the right” to regain that position.
Harris has been in swing states such as Michigan this week, trying to appeal to undecided voters.
Former Republican Congresswoman Liz Cheney accompanied her in a bit to appeal to anti-Trump republicans to gain more votes.
Harris also stopped by Wisconsin, the notoriously republican visiting Waukesha County where Trump won 60 pe rcent of the vote in 2020.
Former President Barack Obama also held a rally in Michigan to garner support for Harris.
Health care, abortion rights and housing prices were all big topics, along with Trump, who Obama compared to the Cuban dictator Fidel Castro.
“He just keeps talking,” Obama told the crowd, insinuating the former President was not fit for a second term.
Robert, a University of Edinburgh student who has cast an early ballot in Vermont for Harris, echoed this sentiment, telling The Student that:
“Trump’s dictatorial rhetoric […] should be avoided at all costs.”
He added that for him abortion and women’s rights are the biggest issue.
While democrats focus on the dangers of a second Trump term, the former President has been visiting southern states affected by Hurricane Helene, such as North Carolina.
Attempting to appeal to Christian voters, Trump claimed a “supernatural hand” protected him from the assassination attempt in July earlier this year.
Trump’s vice presidential candidate, J.D. Vance has been rallying support in Arizona, attacking Harris’ role as Vice President.
He accused Harris of failing to outline clear policies on inflation, saying she has “audacity” to blame Trump for issues when she has “been in power for three-and-a-half years.”
Speaking to The Student, one student voting in Michigan remarked that “Trump doubled our national debt in office”.
They said that the economy and upholding of democracy were most important to them.
“The Trump era needs to end,” they continued.
