Dear Trump,
Female rage doesn’t even begin to describe the feeling that women, not just across the USA but globally as well, are facing this morning. The fact that fathers, brothers, boyfriends, and even mothers and sisters have chosen to prioritise gas prices at the risk of a woman’s right to her own body is entirely beyond me. An issue of fundamental human rights regarding female reproductivity should not be put in the hands of anyone without that uterus. Female bodily autonomy should not be a politicised issue, this does not belong in the political sphere. No man should speak on a woman’s body. Especially not a blatantly racist, homophobic, misogynistic, uneducated boy. Not a man. A boy.
Watching, as a 20-year-old girl in the UK, as bodily rights have been threatened overnight for women everywhere in America is genuinely and devastatingly terrifying. I know this doesn’t affect me directly, but an issue with women’s rights anywhere is an issue everywhere. We are entering a dystopian world, with the US, a global superpower, deeply mirroring The Handmaid’s Tale, which, may I add, has been banned in some deeply republican states. Margaret Attwood said this book is based on real-life events, but it has certainly never felt so realistic since its writing. In a world, as of 2 days ago, where the Taliban has refused women to even speak to each other in Afghanistan, and US women voting for a sexual predator as their head of state, it’s safe to say the world has just taken 1000 steps backwards towards equality.
But this was always the case; women, particularly Harris, have never been respected on the same level as the idolised figure Trump. People didn’t believe in Kamala Harris, a well-educated, eloquent speaker who believed in how great America could be with her help. She was a symbol of hope that had been crushed overnight.
The following four years will be challenging, but women everywhere should not be silenced, but more of an incentive to keep fighting for the next election. Trump does not represent Democracy, which is arguably the most remarkable political system the world has seen, but rather an American Authoritarian regime with extremist followers. The world is in a terrifying state.
If a federal abortion ban comes into place, victims of sexual assault or rape may be forced to birth a product of their most deep trauma. Women suffering an ectopic pregnancy, putting their physical health at severe risk, are already facing difficulties getting access to abortion in Texas with doctors having to watch their patients suffer due to the lack of medical abortions allowed.
Fathers across America, I’m sure, would say they would die for their daughter in a heartbeat; well, now, their daughters might have to die for their political vote. Our Granddaughters in 40 years’ time should not have to fight for the same rights our grandmothers or great-grandmothers fought for.
