Edinburgh societies are open to all: no matter where you’re from, who you are, or what you’re interested in. Financially, however… are they really that accessible? Joining a society after being accepted into university is tempting and a great way to meet new people and make friends whilst pursuing your interests, but what many don’t realise is just how prohibitive the costs may be.
To start, there is usually a joining fee which at first doesn’t seem so bad, but as you start to attend these societies, announcements of weekly social events – often pub socials – start popping up. You think it’s a great idea and go, but then the costs really start to add up. There’s pressure to drink at these events, and the prices in Edinburgh are undeniably through the roof. A pint of Guinness can stretch to £6.50, and shots can cost as much as £5. Over an academic year, attending social pub trips once a week could rack up the equivalent of a return flight to Tenerife. If you want to sacrifice a week’s worth of groceries, look no further: attend a society ball, and for the low price of £35 you will be provided with a snack – drinks sold separately. Don’t forget the new outfit you may want to buy, which of course adds to the expense. By the end of it all, your bank account may be crying at you, but that’s alright because you had the most fantastic time – or regretted every penny.
The accessibility of societies can be easily debated; they are costly and, without a steady stream of income, it can be difficult to balance a wants/needs relationship with your finances. Nevertheless, the social aspect of student life is important: it allows students to switch off from their studies for a little while and relax, and societies provide a fantastic opportunity for widening your social circle. There is little social division within societies as you are more than likely to find one that can suit broad interests. Some will inevitably cost more than others, and no one is required to attend all social events. It simply boils down to what someone wants to spend their money on.
