Updates to North Bridge construction

Engineers restoring the 125-year-old North Bridge published a video indicating progress on constructing the North Bridge, which connects the New Torn with the Old Town.

In March 2018, Edinburgh Council decided to invest in refurbishing the bridge following inspections held between 2014 and 2017. Edinburgh Council hoped the refurbishment would widen access to areas that have been inaccessible since 1900.

The bridge is the main form of travelling between the two divides of Edinburgh, and many students have faced difficulties and delays due to these constructions.

Many buses that travel between the New and Old Town use the North Bridge to shorten the journey. However, heavy buildups often happen due to the small area that traffic must drive through.

Students living in the New Town have spoken out about how they must factor in an extra ten or fifteen minutes when walking to the Old Town due to traffic that builds up.

One student spoke about the annoyance she faces when trying to walk through North Bridge: “I’m usually in a rush when trying to cross the North Bridge, and I find that because of the construction, everyone walks in a single file, making it near impossible to reach the Old Town and university in a timely fashion.”
