American President Donald Trump said, “I get along with him well. I like him a lot,” when asked about Prime Minister Keir Starmer on 26 January.
Trump added that they would be having a conversation within the next 24 hours, and Starmer then complimented Trump on his role in the Gaza ceasefire.
Starmer’s government had been worried that the relationship between the UK and America would sour following Trump’s election victory in November 2024.
Trump’s right-hand man, Elon Musk, has often criticised Starmer and the UK government on his Twitter account.
Musk said in January that Home Office minister Jess Phillips “deserves to be in prison” due to her suggested failure to prosecute British gangs.
Ideological differences were also believed to cause a divide between Starmer and Trump.
However, Trump suggested that this may not be such a big divide as we advance, saying, “I may not agree with his philosophy, but I have a very good relationship with him.”
Some members of the Edinburgh Labour Society said they were rather annoyed with Starmer’s approach to Trump but that they understand diplomacy requires professionalism and objective truths.
They believed that Starmer shouldn’t have praised him so heavily due to all the negative impacts that Trump has had on global society, but agreed with the Prime Minister’s decision to compliment Trump for the UK to become stronger allies with the United States of America.
