Sneaky Pete’s up for BBC Dance Award

BBC Radio 1 recently announced that Edinburgh nightclub Sneaky Pete’s has been nominated for the best dance venue in the UK and Europe. The Radio 1 Dance Awards cover four categories, namely best venue, best clubbing event, best dance festival, and best record label.

The Edinburgh club was nominated alongside some of the most famous UK clubs, including The Warehouse Project in Manchester, Fabric in London, as well as famous venues in Europe, like Hï in Ibiza.

Voting for the best venue took place online, from Monday 10 February, until Friday 14 February.

The club boasts an array of live performances, DJs, and themed nights, and predominantly plays garage, techno, and house music, while also offering soul nights.

Because of their attractive student deals on drinks and being open every night, the club has become a popular destination for students.

The Student interviewed some Edinburgh University students to ask their opinions of Sneaky Pete’s, and what it means for such a small institution to be nominated alongside UK and European powerhouses.

“I love the soul nights the most,” said Isla, a first-year student.

“In general they have a great variety of artists from small bands to DJs, and I think they are good at showcasing a wide range of talent. The atmosphere is also kind of dingy in a cool way. I love its iconic red light.”

She also mentioned what it could mean for a local club to be nominated for such an important award.

“Hopefully it encourages people to look out for artists or DJs they aren’t familiar with, and I hope it will encourage people to experience some music that they maybe aren’t used to.”

The results of the vote will be published by the BBC on Friday 21 February.
