Education Beyond Borders Programme set to double in size

In January 2025, on its one-year anniversary, it was announced by Deputy Vice Principal and Director of Edinburgh Global, Alan MacKay that the postgraduate Education Beyond Borders scheme was expanding with capacity doubling – now reaching 60 – through additional online learning.

Launched in January 2024, the University’s Education Beyond Borders programme seeks to give students who have been displaced through conflict and are currently seeking asylum the opportunity to study at the University of Edinburgh through postgraduate scholarships.

The Scheme welcomed a cohort of 21 students in September 2024 from Ukraine, Sudan, Palestine, and Yemen, amongst others.

The University states that the development of the Education Beyond Borders programme is largely, in part, guided by the students themselves who provide regular feedback and reflection on the programme to help curate a scheme that effectively meets their needs.

Students on the scheme have an enhanced support network, encompassed by access to accommodation, health services, academic preparation, cultural events, and career guidance.

The extension of the scheme, the University attests, is testimony to its success – with MacKay crediting such growth as an opportunity to further “support access to higher education and careers for students and academics forcibly displaced by conflict, violence and persecution.”
