The 2025 Formula 1 season is almost upon us, and with 24 races and six sprints, the Drivers’ Championship battle is closer than ever. Before we kick off in Melbourne this weekend, let’s meet some of the primary Drivers’ Championship contenders.
Max Verstappen: Verstappen enters the 2025 season after four consecutive Championship wins, raising the question of whether he can replicate his title-winning form again. Driving for Red Bull, Verstappen’s domination in recent years is testament to his skill, reliability, and expert racecraft under pressure. However, Red Bull’s performance decline in the latter half of 2024 is set to continue, suggested by struggles during pre-season testing. The real question is whether Verstappen’s driving ability can overcome the difficulties of a less-dominant car.
Lando Norris: Norris spent the latter half of 2024 in a tight championship battle with Verstappen, and with the fast McLaren car, he is a favourite for this year’s WDC. His ambition and loyalty to McLaren put him in a good position at the start of this season, however, his reliability issues and struggles under pressure could hinder his chances. The strength of Verstappen and Ferrari, along with competition from his teammate, could be a challenge for Norris if he doesn’t perform.
Charles Leclerc: Leclerc enters this season as an experienced and ambitious driver. His speed and qualifying consistency make him a fierce contender. Leclerc’s pivotal wins at Monaco and Monza last year have left him with one final goal: winning the Drivers’ Championship. However, despite his ambition, he may face problems if Ferrari’s inconsistent strategic decisions repeat, which could cost him as the title fight intensifies.
Lewis Hamilton: Hamilton’s move to Ferrari at the start of this season, after almost ten years at Mercedes, brings a new dimension to the championship fight. Motivated by his hunger for the eighth title, Hamilton’s experience and relentless pursuit of excellence, as well as his composure under pressure and performance in difficult conditions, sets him up well for championship contention. However, the adjustment period at Ferrari may hinder his performance, especially in comparison to his teammate Leclerc.
Oscar Piastri: Piastri shows huge potential, winning two races last year in only his second season. With McLaren’s dominant car, Piastri’s adaptability and focus make him a strong WDC contender. Yet, despite his calmness under pressure, especially in comparison to his teammate, Norris, he is still relatively inexperienced, and struggles with consistency in qualifying. However, if Piastri can solve his issues with qualifying, he could be a serious contender for the 2025 Driver’s Championship.
