New plans for student flats at Inglis Green Gait, Edinburgh, were approved on 6 March. This comes after their last proposal was rejected.
The vacant lot where the building will take place is roughly one hour’s walk from the University of Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt campuses and 40 minutes away from the main Edinburgh Napier campus.
Plans for the flat’s three-story building were first rejected in September. This was due to a concern for the tree roots in the vacant lot, which the building would have destroyed.
Only 19 of the 48 local trees will be removed in the new proposal. The application has also promised that the new timber building will “reinforce the existing and ageing tree structure and benefit the prevailing wooded character of the wider setting to the site.”
One first-year student, Peter, was asked by the Student what he thought of the new housing.
“I like the idea of new housing, especially considering how difficult it is to secure a flat after first-year. I am interested to see whether this will be a useful alternative for students who are unable to secure their own flat.”
Another student, Hanna, seemed less sure about its purpose, calling the location “inconvenient for students of Heriot-Watt and Edinburgh.” She also mentioned that it “already feels like there’s so many UniteStudents accommodations in Edinburgh… I’m not sure what one 3-storey building will achieve.”
